Anaesthesia and Pain Control Audit

BILD0132

Your opinions are of great value in maintaining an excellent service.

During your stay at the Orthopaedics & Spine Specialist Hospital we ask that you complete a short questionnaire about your anaesthetic and postoperative problems such as pain, nausea and vomiting. Our staff will be on hand to assist you in completing the questionnaire.

Audit Standards
  • All patients scheduled to undergo surgery with sedation or anaesthesia will be visited by an anaesthetist before their operation.
  • The anaesthetist will explain the nature of the proposed anesthetic and discuss options, possible risks and complications.
  • Patients planning to return home on the day of surgery should be advised to refrain from driving, operating heavy machinery, engaging in activities that require fine control or balance, signing any legal or financial papers or drinking alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours after discharge.
  • All patients will receive post operative analgesics (painkillers) so that they experience mild or no pain in the immediate postoperative period.
  • All patients will be assessed by the anaesthetist in the recovery area and following discharge to the ward.
  • Prophylactic (preventative) anti-sickness medication will be administered to all patients. Patients experiencing postoperative nausea or vomiting will receive anti-sickness medication in a timely fashion.
  • Adequate pain control will be established before patients are discharged.
