Orthopaedics and Spine Specialist Hospital (OSSH)
PROGRESS REPORT

(15th December 2004 – 31st August 2007)

Services Provided

To achieve a safe start of the service, the hospital planned and carried out a “ramp up” service provision immediately after opening. In December 04/January 05 only day cases were treated followed by cases of intermediate complexity Jan/Feb then major and complex major operations from February 05. This achieved a safe start of services.

The following list shows the types of services provided at the hospital:
  • Surgery for treatment of back pain (decompression, microdiscectomy, fusion, resection of tumours, correction of deformity, disc replacement).
  • Total joint replacements (hip replacement, knee replacement and shoulder replacement) both primary and revision.
  • Arthroscopic procedures for knee, ankle and shoulder.
  • Ligament repair and replacement both open and arthroscopies for knee and shoulder and ankle.
  • Hand and foot procedures.
  • Pain management procedures e.g., facet joint injections, epidural injections and nerve blocks.
  • X-ray and MRI scans on site facilities.

OSSH has been inclusive to all patients with orthopaedics and spinal conditions whether self-funding, insured or referred from the NHS. All patients receive the same top quality of care. Patient’s ages have ranged from 18-92 years old. The hospital treats all patients except those with unstable co morbidity e.g. heart failure, uncontrolled diabetes or very high-uncontrolled blood pressure. OSSH will treat patients with BMI up to 40.

There is a Resident Medical Officer on site all the time patients are in hospital. In order to run a safe, high quality service the hospital maintained mostly the same RMO’s, since it opened. There is also 24/7 access to consultant surgeons and anaesthetists. OSSH has a Close Observation Unit for use by patients who require continuous monitoring/observation. OSSH also has urgent transfer protocol to local acute hospitals for the rare times when a patient needs access to higher levels of care.
